Our Approach

Positive Behaviour Strategies (PBS)

Our behaviour approach, at East Kalgoorlie Primary School, is based on the principles of Positive Behaviour Strategies (PBS). PBS applies evidence-based approaches, practices and strategies for all students to increase academic performance, improve safety, decrease challenging behaviour, and establish a positive school culture.

Strategies for Success

PBS places a major focus on prevention and the following key elements help to create a safe, positive and productive learning environment:

PBS is a school wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behaviour and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning. Our school values, defined by the community, guide the behaviour of everyone in our school; staff, students, parents and community members.

At East Kalgoorlie Primary School we have PRIDE, we are Positive, Respectful, Inclusive, Determined and Excellent

Behaviour Expectations

Our behaviour expectations are taught through a fortnightly focus on specific PRIDE behaviours. Each behaviour is explicitly taught in classrooms and reinforced across the whole school. This shared approach ensures students hear consistent language and receive clear messages about positive behaviour.

Student Behaviour Matrix

Core Routines

At East Kalgoorlie Primary School, core routines are explicitly taught in the same way as curriculum knowledge and skills. Students are shown what each routine looks and sounds like, given opportunities to practise it and supported with clear feedback and regular reinforcement.

A consistent whole-school approach means students encounter the same expectations, language and routines across classrooms and learning areas.

This provides:

  • structure, predictability and a sense of safety
  • more time for teaching and learning
  • smoother transitions between activities
  • greater student independence and confidence
  • consistent support for positive behaviour
  • a calm, orderly and inclusive learning environment

Teachers select and adapt routines to suit their students’ ages, needs and learning contexts while maintaining agreed whole-school expectations. Routines may cover entering the classroom, gaining attention, transitioning between activities, using learning materials, participating in discussions and moving safely around the school.

When routines are explicitly taught, practised and reinforced, students do not have to guess what is expected of them. This reduces uncertainty and allows them to focus their attention on learning.
