Teaching and Learning Programs
At East Kalgoorlie Primary School, we use several programs to support our teachers in delivering explicit instruction. Many of these programs are highly structured programs that allow students to process new information effectively whilst reducing cognitive overload.
English
We believe in building strong foundations for every child’s future!
Our approach combines explicit instruction with a strong focus on foundational skills to build confidence and mastery in all areas of learning.
Every day, our students engage in a Daily Review, reinforcing what’s been learned and ensuring retention.
Let’s Decode is an important component of our teaching day for our Kindergarten to Year Two students, it fosters phonological awareness and systematic decoding techniques, paving the way for fluent reading.
We utilise the Spelling Mastery program from year one through to year 6, the program strengthens students phonemic, morphemic and whole-word knowledge so they can become confident and successful spellers.
The Writing Revolution equips students with the tools to write clearly, effectively, and with purpose. Together, we are shaping confident readers, writers, and thinkers!
For students in Years 3-6 who need extra help, we offer Corrective Reading, providing targeted support to boost reading skills and build confidence.
We are committed to developing confident, capable readers and writers!
Numeracy
Our Mathematics curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all students, with engaging and research-based programs like Origo for mathematics, Origo is designed to make learning meaningful and accessible for students and teachers.
We also incorporate the Top Ten hands-on approach to mathematics to support the Origo scope and sequence. This provides students with the opportunity reason, think out load and use materials to make sense of maths.
To reinforce and retain learning, we dedicate time each day to Daily Review, ensuring students confidently revisit and consolidate what they’ve learned.
Every child’s learning journey is guided by explicit instruction to ensure mastery of essential skills.
Integrated Planning
Languages (Wangkatja), Two-way Science, Humanities and Social Sciences Technologies and The Arts
Our Integrated Planning Model focus’ around our student’s prior knowledge and our culturally responsive approach to everything that we do within the school, to support our students, their families and wider school community.
Languages (Wangkatja) and Two-way Science guide our teachers in their classroom planning to ensure students build content knowledge through their prior knowledge.
At East Kalgoorlie Primary School, our Integrated Planning Model focuses on building a strong foundation by recognising and valuing our students’ prior knowledge. We take a culturally responsive approach in everything we do, ensuring that our teaching reflects the diverse backgrounds of our students and their families. This approach helps us support not only our students but also their families and the wider school community.
Our curriculum is enriched by the inclusion of Languages (Wangkatja) and Two-Way Science, guiding our teachers in planning lessons that connect with students’ lived experiences. By building on prior knowledge, we ensure that all students engage meaningfully with new content, deepening their understanding and fostering a sense of pride in their learning journey. We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
Health & Physical Education
We are committed to supporting the whole child through our comprehensive Health and Physical Education program. We provide students with three hours of dedicated teaching each week, covering Health, Physical Education, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
Our Daily Fitness (KIDDO) and Physical Education program focus on explicitly teaching Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS), the KIDDO program helps students learn to move with confidence and control. These skills not only improve physical strength, posture, and sleep but also enhance students’ social skills, self-esteem, and sense of achievement. FMS help students build the foundation for lifelong physical activity, empowering them to lead healthy and active lives.
We value Daily Fitness (KIDDO), as it is designed to teach FMS, but it also fosters meaningful relationships across our school. These connections between students and staff are an essential part of our educational philosophy and the reason behind everything we do as educators.
In the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Health spaces, our specialist teacher focuses on supporting student wellbeing, promoting positive behaviours, and nurturing healthy relationships. The programs Friendly Schools and Zones of Regulation, help students develop vital social and emotional skills, enabling them to express themselves, understand others, and manage their emotions effectively. At East Kalgoorlie Primary School, we believe that building strong emotional and social foundations is just as important as academic learning.
